Take the lead, host a talk in your workplace or community and get a life-saving message to those around you.
Want to host an Awareness Talk? Here’s how.
We’re starting a pilot programme of Awareness Talks for workplaces and community groups and have a valuable resource slideshow put together by Kainic Medical, along with our ambassadors who have personal experience of bowel cancer and can share life-saving information. Tailored to your setting and to a time that suits your group, these talks can provide awareness on early symptoms and treatment. An invaluable education on what to look out for as an individual and within your family circle. If you would like to find out more please email us, and enquire if a Ambassador is available in your region.
BCNZ aims to educate by providing clear and up-to-date information about the disease, symptoms and what to do if diagnosed, to support and advocate for patients and families affected by bowel cancer, and to support research which can help to reduce the impact of bowel cancer on New Zealanders.
Bowel Cancer Statistics
- In 2014, the most recent release of the New Zealand Ministry of Health Cancer Statistics, 3277 New Zealanders were diagnosed with bowel cancer – that’s 63 people diagnosed each week.
- In 2013, 1252 New Zealanders died from bowel cancer – that’s 104 people dying each month.
- As many New Zealanders die each year of bowel cancer as breast and prostate cancer combined.
- New Zealand has one of the highest rates of bowel cancer and bowel cancer death in the developed world.
BCNZ seeks to add value to the work of health professionals by helping raise awareness of bowel cancer and bowel cancer symptoms in the wider community. We do this in several ways including (but not limited to): provision of information about symptoms in lay language, talking openly about bowel cancer and sharing stories of diagnosis, treatment and outcome.
In 2016 we distributed literature to over over 800 GPs surgeries and hospitals nationwide through the Mediboard Health Promotion Special for a 3 month campaign.
